Is your PS4 console making a beeping sound when it starts…and then doesn’t really start? No, you’re not crazy, your PS4 really is beeping, and the sound may be coming from inside your game console, not your speakers.
Connect Seagate external hard drive with PC; Run EaseUS Data Recovery Wizard and select location. With this PS4 version 4.50 update, now you can store content to an external hard drive by plugging in a USB 3.0 HDD into your PS4. Bingo, you can quintuple the original space on your console with a Seagate Game Drive for PS4 with 2TB, or use another of our portable models for easy travel to friends’ houses with up to 5TB of space. These beeps are called beep codes and are used by the BIOS (the software that runs your PS4 hardware) during the POST (an initial test to make sure your PS4 is OK to start) to report certain initial system errors.
If you’re hearing beep codes after you turn your PS4 on, it typically means that the motherboard has encountered some kind of problem before it was able to send any kind of error information to the monitor. The beeping, then, is a way to communicate a problem to you when the PS4 console can’t show a proper error on the screen.
Some users get their PS4 beeping while in rest mode only, not when the PS4 turns on. This case is easier to fix than when the PS4 beeps at the boot-up time.
Here in this article we’ll try to figure out why the PS4 beeps and how to fix the error related to it.
When Does the PS4 Beep Normally?
When the PS4 is turned on, it runs a Power-On Self Test (POST) to check that various hardware components are working correctly. If problems are detected, the PS4 will not start. This test runs before the PS4 is ready to display anything on the monitor, so if any faults are found, the PS4 will beep to indicate an error.
On the other hand, the PS4 does beep even if there’s no issue with the system. and that’s in the following situations:
- Wake up using controller (“Keep Application Suspended” disabled).
- Wake up using controller while a game is suspended.
- Wake up using power button (“Keep Application Suspended” disabled).
- Wake up using power button while a game is suspended.
- Wake up by putting a disk in the disk tray (PS4 won’t take the disk for the first couple of seconds after waking up).
- Put in Rest Mode using power button.
- Eject disk using eject button.
- Pressing eject button while no disk is present (PS4 beeps twice).
- Improper shutdown due to PS4 crashing (PS4 beeps multiple times).
If it doesn’t beep for all of the above, your PS4’s speaker might be defective.
Basic troubleshooting steps can often identify common problems and isolate defective components that may cause a PS4 to beep and fail to operate as it should be.
The PS4 Three Beeps
One of the most common situations about PS4 beeping is that when the PS4 beeps three times then turns off. These beeps are also known as the PS4 3 beeps of death. That happens either when you try to turn the PS4 on, but it gives you triple beeps telling you “goodbye, I am going to turn off”, then it shuts down. Or when you’re playing your favorite game, then suddenly these three annoying beeps happen and the PS4 consequently shuts down.
So, what does that mean? And why does the PS4 gives three beeps in such situations?
Let’s address each case separately and try to figure out what causes it and how to fix it.
Beeps When Turning on The PS4
The PS4 three beeps at start-up mean there has been a parity error in base memory. This problem affects the first 64kb block of memory in the PS4 RAM.
Additionally, the three beeps may mean that the motherboard timer is not working properly but they could also mean that there’s a problem with the RAM module that’s in the lowest (usually marked 0) slot.
Like all RAM and motherboard problems in PS4, this isn’t usually something you’ll be able to fix yourself or get repaired. You have to consult with an experienced technician.
If the beeps constantly continue and don’t stop, it means either the CPU or GPU is damaged. It can mean also the motherboard is miserably malfunctioning and is about to go on the fritz.
Resolving the Issue
The only thing you can do here is to turn off the PS4, switch off power and unplug the power cable from the power outlet. Wait minimum 10 seconds then plug the power cable and switch on power. Now try to turn on the PS4 and check whether the problem is resolved or not.
If not, most likely your PS4 is in a dire straits and you have to take it to a well-versed technician.

Beeps When Coming out of Rest Mode
Your PS4 may start fine with no issue, but the beeps come out after turning on the PS4 from the Rest Mode.
You may have put the PS4 in Rest Mode, then it beeps when you press the power button on the controller to turn it on. Your PS4 has the latest firmware and system software update, yet it still gives out these annoying beeps.
By the sound of it, as you already noted, your PS4 might have a hardware problem. If it’s just the speaker, then you shouldn’t have to worry too much as far as I can tell. On the contrary, it could more than just a broken speaker.
For quite some time, the PS4 would randomly beep at unexpected moments (and even occasionally shutoff) while it is in rest mode. After doing some investigation, my research lead me to one of two problems:
- Overheating system
- Failing hard drive
So, first make sure the PS4 is clean inside and the fan is spinning seamlessly and you have no issue with overheating. Additionally, you can read more our guide on PS4 overheating if you need additional details about this issue.
If you confirm then that it’s the PS4 hard drive that causes this issue, you have to try first to fix it before seeking a replacement. Try to full format it by connecting it to a computer. If the PS4 hard drive is not physically damaged, a full format should restore its original functionality and the beeps will fade out.
Otherwise, you have to replace the PS4 internal hard drive with a better drive. In fact, you have to do that step in all cases if you seek performance improvement and want to avoid any major errors in the future.
PS4 Beeping and Ejecting Disc
Sony has released an official fix for the beeping PS4 that automatically ejects the Disc drive. It suggests a few solutions that are:
- Switch your PS4 off and on again
- Ensure that the latest system software update is installed on your PS4 system
- Tighten the manual eject screw
- Check the disc for scratches and dirt
- Change the Blu-ray disc
- Contact PS4 Support
These are the headlines of the suggested solutions. You can view the details on the official page.
Common and Easily Fixed Beeping PS4 Problems
Check the Controller
Check the PS4 controller to ensure that there are no stuck button and no buttons are being held down. Run your fingers over the controller to free any buttons that may be stuck. If a drink was spilled on the controller, replace the controller with a new one. Try to start the PS4 again after completing this and each of the following steps.
Check the Cables
Check all cables connected to the PS4 and make sure they are fully plugged in. Inspect each cable and securely connect or tighten cables as required.
Let the PS4 Vent
Remove any objects blocking the PS4’s air vents. If dust has accumulated in any vent, vacuum the exterior vents and carefully vacuum dust from the heat sinks and vents inside the PS4.

Disconnect External Devices
Disconnect external devices such as VR, USB sticks and hubs, headsets and external drives. If then the PS4 starts without external devices connected, one of these components may be defective. Reconnect them one at a time to identify which device is defective.
Conclusion
If you implemented all suggested solution above and still nothing works, your PS4 might undergo a serious hardware issue and you have to take it to a technician or call the PS4 support center.
